2026 Dubbed the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has noticeably surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this phenomenon, I undertook a thorough analysis into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's growing prominence in the public consciousness is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the explosion in gaming appears especially pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year yet.

If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine croaking cultural moment.
