A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Animated Journey with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

In this cartoon adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering teeth from sleeping children and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) shows little enthusiasm about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more interested in the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who provide metal in exchange. But Van’s curiosity grows when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous creature he had imagined.

A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are separated from each other, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to bring people together. The two species portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are said to be self-centered sorts, given to taking anything they want, while goblins are reportedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are in fact bright and advanced in technology.

Of course, such a setup requires a shared foe to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

There aren’t very many children’s animations targeting the kind of audience that is starting to experience early romances, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever 14-year-olds are watching instead of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story releases in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
