A senior officer who rushed to the assistance of a fellow officer who was ambushed by a knife attacker has been awarded the Royal Recognition for Valor.

Sgt Tim Ansell fought with 27-yr-old Jacob Brown following he held a blade to the throat of his partner Sgt Marc Foster.

Brown initiated the assault as the law enforcement personnel and their colleague, Police Constable Marcus Wolstencroft, were speaking to a motorist following a vehicle incident in Whalley Range in summer 2023.

Brown knifed and cut both Sgt Ansell and Sergeant Foster before Police Constable Wolstencroft stopped him with a stun gun.

"Policeman stabbed," PC Wolstencroft stated over his communication device.

Bodyworn and vehicle camera footage shared by the police department revealed Brown, who was dressed in dark clothing with a hood up, approach to Sgt Foster from the rear with a blade extended.

He ran into the policeman who stumbled and dropped to the ground, after which Sgt Ansell jumped in and struggled to restrain him to the pavement even though being repeatedly struck with the knife.

Police Constable Wolstencroft pulled his stun gun and awaited a clear shot, bringing the confrontation to an conclusion.

Sergeant Ansell stated audibly: "Please provide help on my neck now, I got knifed in the neck."

Sgt Ansell received two deep cuts to his neck and further cuts to his limbs and body, while Sgt Foster received knife wounds.

Officials said Sgt Foster used his bare hands to stop his fellow officer's hemorrhaging prior to paramedics arrived.

The latest recognition follows after the three officers won organizational Courage Honors in fall 2023 and the prestigious bravery honor from the regional Police Federation in early 2024.

They further earned a Area Valor Recognition in summer 2024.

"The responses of all three officers in the end rescued each other and resulted in no members of the public suffered any wounds."

Brown was given to an indefinite hospital order in spring 2024, according to officials.
